The Arizona Coyotes are a professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona. The Coyotes first played at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix, before moving to Glendale’s Gila River Arena in 2003 where Arizona Coyotes Ticket Holders can still watch the team today. Arizona Coyotes fans can get tickets to Gila River Arena at Golden Tickets.
The Coyotes were originally founded on December 27, 1971, as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA). After the WHA had ceased operations, they were one of four franchises absorbed into the NHL. The small-market Jets struggled financially and in 1996 the team was relocated to Arizona and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coyotes fans were hopeful as they watched their hometown franchise qualify for the post-season in each of their first 4 seasons in Phoenix. However, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became the Coyotes’ head coach in 2005 and the team failed to finish any higher than second-to-last in its division during Gretzky’s tenure.
Gretzky stepped down in 2009 and the owner of the team declared bankruptcy and ceded ownership of the team to the NHL. Despite the turmoil, the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009–2010 season (the team’s highest win total since joining the NHL). In 2012, the Coyotes won their first division title in franchise history.
In 2013 the NHL sold the team to an ownership group that vowed to keep the Coyotes in Arizona. The franchise changed its name to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014 to appeal to fans statewide. In August 2016, Arizona Coyotes Ticket Holders saw the team make history when they hired Dawn Braid, the first female full-time coach in the NHL, as the Coyotes’ skating coach.
